Quality Area 2

VET student support

VET students are treated fairly and properly informed, supported and protected. Eight Outcome Standards, 2.1 to 2.8, running from the information a student sees before enrolling to the appeal they can lodge at the end.

Standards 2.1 – 2.4

Information, suitability, support and adjustment

Standard 2.1

VET students have access to clear and accurate information concerning the organisation, the relevant training product, and students are made aware of any changes that may affect them.

What it asks for. Accuracy at the point of decision, and notification when something changes afterwards. The second half is the part most often missed: a change no one told the student about is a finding even when the original information was correct.

What evidence looks like. Version-controlled public information with dates, and a record of what students were told when something changed.

Standard 2.2

VET students are advised, prior to enrolment, about the suitability of the training product for them, taking into account the student's skills and competencies.

What it asks for. An individual judgement before enrolment, informed by that student's existing skills — not a generic entry-requirements page.

Standard 2.3

VET students have access to support services, trainers and assessors and other staff to support their progress throughout the training product.

What it asks for. Access throughout, not only at induction, and to people as well as to services.

Standard 2.4

Reasonable adjustments are made to support VET students with disability to access and participate in training and assessment on an equal basis.

What it asks for. Adjustments actually made, recorded against the student, and made without compromising the assessment judgement itself.

Standards 2.5 – 2.8

Diversity, wellbeing, complaints and appeals

Standard 2.5

The learning environment promotes and supports the diversity of VET students.

Standard 2.6

The wellbeing needs of the VET student cohort are identified and strategies are put in place to support these needs.

What it asks for. Identification at the cohort level followed by a strategy — two steps, and the first one is where the evidence usually stops. Naming a support service is not the same as having identified what this cohort needs.

Standard 2.7

Feedback and complaints management addresses concerns and informs continuous improvement of the NVR registered training organisation.

What it asks for. Two obligations in one sentence. The complaint has to be addressed, and it has to inform improvement. A complaints register that records outcomes but never feeds anything is compliant with half the Standard.

Standard 2.8

Effective appeal processes are available to VET students where decisions of the NVR registered training organisation or a third party adversely affect the student.

What it asks for. Appeals are a separate Standard from complaints. When you are writing about both, cite both — 2.7 and 2.8 — because they are separately assessed. Note the explicit inclusion of third-party decisions.

What evidence looks like. For both: a register showing every matter, when it was raised, who handled it, what was decided, when the student was told, and what changed in the organisation as a result. Standards 2.7(e) and 2.8(d) both require that last link, which is why they are legitimate supporting citations alongside Standard 4.4.

In Qualticks

Where this work lives.

Complaints and appeals under Standards 2.7 and 2.8 sit in findings that close themselves, alongside the continuous improvement register the Standards require them to inform. Complaints can be lodged through a branded public form that needs no login, and the complainant can track progress through a portal.

The connection those two Standards ask for — a complaint that changes something — is the one the platform enforces rather than encourages: the improvement entry that comes out of a complaint cannot be closed with a tick, only with a written account of what was actually done.
